I Heart Gursky

Last night we went to the opening at Matthew Marks for Gursky's new work. It is amazing. Beyond the aesthetic pleasure and awesome size of his pieces, I resonate with them in ways I can't fully explain. Sure, I love his formalism, repetition, and color. I love that I can't tell where his manipulations begin or end, so that I am playing a guessing game with each image. And I love all of his German-ness, his photographic lineage so evident. They are images to be reckoned with, and the experience of being in a gallery full of them is to be remembered. I don't think I've ever seen more than one at a time up on a wall in a museum or gallery before, and seeing them reproduced online or in print is not quite the same.
